Postcard #7: Bovines

I am trying to overcome my fascination with the cows. They are hard to avoid, when you are walking to a cafe and there are five of them sitting in a pile of yard debris and trash, two ruminating and three foraging in the organic material. Yesterday night, one was walking along the median line in the road. They brazenly cross the street at any time that is convenient for them. They stand still in the middle of of a busy boulevard despite rush-hour traffic, chewing their cud, completely unfazed by the swerving cars or the honking.

The thing is, last night, Pierre’s driver, Rakesh, explained to me that these cows belong to someone. These are city cows that commute everyday to the residential streets to graze. They leave the house every morning, instead of going to the pasture, they head out into the city and forage and then head home every night around the same time to be milked. Cows that commute . . . The question is from where?
